2005 MEGA Conference
 Off-Site Workshops and Events Schedule

 June 6-9, 2005

The Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education will conduct off-site arts education professional development training during the 2005 MEGA Conference. These three-hour workshops are available for CEU credit. Cost for each workshop is $25. Please make check payable to MAAE and mail to:

It is not necessary to be registered for the MEGA Conference to participate in off-site workshops. A minimum of 10 pre-registered participants will be required for a workshop to be offered. Registration deadline is May 27, 2005.

Elementary Integrated Arts Framework Implementation Training
Presenter: Kathryn Cascio Lewis, Delta State University 

Location: Walter Anderson Museum of Art
                 510 Washington Avenue, Ocean Springs

Introduction to the newly-revised Visual and Performing Arts Frameworks including overview of the new structure, hands-on activities explaining each strand, vocabulary and basic concepts handouts related to each art form, and participation in sample lessons from each arts discipline focusing on connections among them as well as to non-arts curricula.

As Assistant Professor of Art Education at Delta State, Dr. Kathryn Lewis teaches art education and elementary education majors. She designed this training for the implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts Framework for the Mississippi Department of Education.

Apples to Ambrosia: A Recipe for Magic!
Presenter: M. J. Etua, President, Mississippi Theatre Association & Theatre Teacher, Louisville High School

Location: Center Stage Theatre
                 240 Eisenhower Drive, Biloxi

How do you start with a simple script and create an awesome spectacular? In this workshop, participants will take simple scripts and, through easy script analysis techniques, learn to create elements tailored especially for their students. The end result can generate exciting and meaningful productions for students and audiences alike.

M.J. Etua, president of the Mississippi Theatre Association, teaches theatre at Louisville High School, and is founder/director/playwright of Project P.L.A.Y. children’s theatre.

Dance, Movement, and The Framework!
Presenters: Julie Hammond, Assistant Professor of Dance, University of Southern Mississippi; Tammy Stanford, K-12 dance educator

Location: Walter Anderson Museum of Art
                510 Washington Avenue, Ocean Springs

Learn simple ways to incorporate movement into classroom instruction. Designed for educators with little or no dance experience who understand the power of incorporating the arts to diversify learning approach, enhance comprehension and foster motivation and discipline of focus. User-friendly lesson plans as well as simple ongoing frameworks to help develop a curricular partnership.

Julie Hammond is assistant professor of dance at USM, former K-12 dance educator, and a passionate advocate of arts infusion and instructing academics by making dance accessible. Tammy Stanford, K-12 dance educator, presenter, and framework writing committee member, has created five public school dance programs in Mississippi. In May 2004 she received the MAAE Thad Cochran Distinguished Arts Educator Award.

Exploring Outer Space: An Art Experience
Presenter: Rachel Ballentine, Visual Art Teacher, Panola School District, & Potter

Location: Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art
                 136 G.E. Ohr Street, Biloxi

Participants will construct the planetary system by creating an environment to travel to each of the planets. Along the way they will create space vessels, space debris, creatures from outer space, and a space station. Working in groups, participants will experience how to build the planetary system as well as create objects from their imagination. 

Rachel Ballentine is a part-time high school art teacher and has presented workshops for in-school and after-school programs. She has spent four years working with teachers to infuse visual art into the curriculum. A potter, she has exhibited in Illinois, Tennessee, and Mississippi. She is an MAAE board member and has served as a visual art assessor for the Mississippi School for the Arts.

Teaching Mississippi Architecture as Cultural History and Aesthetic Context
Presenter: Dr. Douglas Lewis, Curator of Architecture and Decorative Arts, retired, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Location: Walter Anderson Museum of Art
                 510 Washington Avenue, Ocean Springs

Author of the forthcoming “Buildings of Mississippi” in the NEH series of the  “Buildings of the United States,” the presenter proposes the use of Mississippi’s historic architecture as both exemplar and vehicle for the study of local and regional history; and through its analysis, often illustrating national and even international cultural and aesthetic/intellectual environments.

Dr. Lewis holds BA, MA, & PhD degrees from Yale University and BA, MA from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom; Diploma from American Academy in Rome; former Curator/Department Head, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1968-2004); Visiting Professor at Bryn Mawr College, University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, University of Maryland Honors Program, and Tulane University.

From PINK to MOZART: Color Your Teaching with MUSIC!
Presenters: Lynn Weems & Mynette Minshew, Music Specialists, Pearl Public School District                       

Location: Walter Anderson Museum of Art
                510 Washington Avenue, Ocean Springs

Classroom teachers will learn how to use music to enhance subject areas and curriculum. From the rock artist PINK to the music master MOZART, music can challenge and inspire students at all levels and in all subjects. This workshop combines demonstration, small group activities, and creative suggestions with an energetic presentation.

MENC Registered Music Educator, Lynn Weems, and National Board Certified Music Teacher, Mynette Minshew, are music specialists in the Pearl Public Schools. Both Weems and Minshew are active in professional music and education organizations and serve as mentors for new teachers and as supervising teachers for college student teachers.
